Lowe's comes to the Valley

Well, another big box company is coming to Derby. The question is whether or not this is a good thing?....the tax revenue will be great, but what happens to the community?

Let me ask you. How can this be a bad thing???

It will be nothing different than what has been there for the last 75 years.

What about trying something new. something that provide better then minimum wage jobs...why not take a shot at a coorprate park like in shelton....

Tax revenue is great, but we have to develope our community in a smart way...what happends in 10 years when lowes pulls out, then what goes there...we have to be smarter about it...i think that is the point of the post

That plaza is zoned commercial, not industrial. You cannot spot zone it industrial as BKing, D and D and Marcucios are all commercially zoned.

So what, who cares how it is zoned, that can be changed...

You cannot spot zone.....meaning having Industrial surrounded by commercial....you just cant do it. You will open up the city to litigation.

so then how is it where Cinto's towers are there are resturants and drug stores?

Anonymous said...

I dont know who Cinto is.

If you are speaking of Scinto, that is in Shelton.

That is a different town.

so we shoudl just except a bad policy instead of trying to change it?

So you are suggesting we change the zoning regulations in the City of Derby???

It is not a bad policy, look at the proximity to residential areas Lowes is. Residents dont want to see 20' industrial towers.

Zoning is put in place to protect the residents. You just cant go changing it around without repurcussions.

Yeah, 20 story industrial towers will go over really well with Commodore Hull and Wooster Hill.

Please think before you speak making idiotic suggestions.

lol.....no one said twenty story buildings...but we have to do better then just low paying jobs....jesus think out side the box man.....

In order to make the "Scinto" towers work, you need a lot of square footage in order to make them profitable. I believe that is why the poster said 20 stories.

Thinking outsde the box is easy, implementation is the problem. Everyone always had these grand ideas....but those are the people who are really clueless.

so what is the solution?

Anonymous said...

Ummm, see the article.

Right, so just keep bringing in low income jobs.....you must be a brillant....people like you are teh very reason our community is in a rutt....no vision, just excuses

Unless your next post offers a solution, please dont post anymore.

Facts are not excuses. You need to come back to reality.

If someone lives in Derby and is only qualified for a low income job, how is building a building which houses a high income job going to help them???

Where is the logic.

Do you think all the employees at Scinto Towers live in Shelton??? Ill bet most dont.

maybe, maybe not....but there is no question that scinto towers was one of teh major reasons that shelton made a comeback. And maybe your right about the peopel who work there don;t live in shelton, but the same argument can be said of the low income jobs in Derby. Most of the employees at walwart do not lve in Derby, in fact many of them take a bus from New Haven.

If i want to actract people to live in the Downtown Development i better improve the community because last time i checked people working at lowes and walwart are not going to afford tickets for a show at the Sterling Opera house.

I understand what your saying about facts, but don't tell me that Derby couldn't use a boost and an attempt to improve this community.

I agree 1000% Derby could use a boost. But, I believe this boost will come from a higher grand list though, therefore increasing services (especially education),while at the same time stabilizing the mil rate.

I believe the people targeted by the Downtown development are the ones living in Fairfield county ATM. The redevelopment is not targeting the employees you spek of. Lets faced it, the Fairfield County area is pretty saturated (and expensive) and Derby is the next logical progressive step.

I dont see your correlation with Derby being in a rut, and Lowes coming in??? I see it as an increase in the grand list, and an opportunity to clean up a close to blighted area.

Can we at least agree Derby is turning around with the new Griffin Cancer Center, Club Ballroom, bakery on Elizabeth, Archie Moores, and Lowes??

I appreciate the conversation.

i agree that derby is making a come back, i am just argue that we have to be smart about, and so far so good.

My point is we also have to focus on smart growth not just come now come fast. There has to be a combination of Lowes and Higher paying jobs. Otherwise the city will be right back where it is now in 20 years.

I guess what i am saying is if this city wants to be the next step past Fairfield county we need to transform. I just hope we keep our sense of community.
