New School in Derby

Apparently the newspapers like to cover Derby more then the other towns.
Recently the discussion on whether or not the City of Derby should offer two questions for Ref. on a new school. The city will give the expensive plan, less expensive and no. Is offering options such as this a good thing in a city which has failed to provide it's student a new school bulding in more then 30 years?

I think the bigger issue is that of the BOE educating the public on the need for space. They have not done a very good job of that in the past, including now.

i agree, no one goes out and pushes for the schools. Getting a story in the paper isn't enough.

some one needs to organize an effort to pass one of these options, we can't wait anymore

The effort has to come from the BOE, PTOs and PTAs. It does no good just speaking with the parents, as they are the people already voting 'yes.' The need to reach the known 'no' voters.

exactly...i think teh politicans are afraid to lose votes...be a leader stand up at convince people this will be good for the community.

I don;t think they will do anything though...WHY ARE THEY AFRAID.

And who is to blame?

The Board and Aldermen and Tax Board cannot publically endorse or disapprove of a choice on a referendum ballot. That is the law.

Correction to above:

The administration cannot use tax money to endorse a referendum question. (For exapmple putting out mailers)

i am not saying use tax payer dollars, but they coudl start a fund....like a PAC, or even going door to door or make phone calls....it is just an excuse to be lazy....

Im surprised we havent see/read anything from the BOE, PTO's or PTAs yet.

The aldermen have been talking about this referendum since November. The BOE could have had a 2 month head start educating the public........but nothing.

that is my point, they aren;t trying hard enough

Derby needs a youth movement that is the only way this stuff will be approved. We need a fresher outlook and someone who thinks outside the box and will speak his mind on all issues.
Romano should have run for mayor and then went to state rep. Yes using it as only a springboard may have been bad, but he could have built a foundation here which is what we are lacking. Every mayor continues down the same path, start off doing what was started and then everything stalls.
We need a mayor that will stick his nose into the Board of Ed. and make some noise, we need more of our youth to stay in our system rather then jet off to private schools. This is why we need new schools and new athletic fields. Make our small tight knit community a better and brighter place to get a education. Draw some new people here because they want to be part of our system.

This will help in every aspect of what is trying to be done ...
Stop whining and just do it!!!

Problem is you cannot make sweeping changes in 2 years.

Romano for mayor?? Cmon, no political office experience and no business experience. It takes more than being just young to make a good mayor.

Your right it takes more then being young, but the young are more apt to take the chances. Also Romano has political experience and worked to get Stafferi where he is...

Romano has no practical political experience meaning he never held office.

He had very little to do with Tony being mayor.
